I'm Nessa K. I drink an absurd amount of tea. I love breakfast and desserts more than most things, and I adore art museums. When I was young, art was the only career I ever considered, which led me to graduate with honors in photography and digital imagery from Shepherd University. From there, editorial shoots, lifestyle portraiture, and a stint as a newspaper photojournalist shaped how I actually see.
I got into weddings almost by accident. I'd show up to meetings with prints from friends' fashion storefronts, or a campaign I shot for a sushi place in Austin, and say: this is how I make art, not this is what a wedding looks like. Eighteen years later, that's still the whole idea. I'm not trying to show you what a wedding day looks like. I'm trying to show you what two people look like walking up the steps, sharing a look nobody else catches.
More than making art, this work is about connection. People don't want a fabrication of their lives; they want what's real. To see the fingerprints in it. The process. A few weeks ago I photographed a family I first photographed fifteen years ago, back when we both lived in Austin. Their hallway was covered in photos I'd taken. Engagement session, wedding, the first baby, the second. That's still my favorite kind of proof: not that the photos were good, but that they're still loved, after all this time.
