Every wedding I shoot has a unique story to tell, and this Virginia family farm wedding in Blacksburg, VA, was no exception. If you’re looking for a truly whimsical, magic-in-the-forest experience, stay tuned.

From flower girls tossing petals with abandon, to a just married sign dangling from the back of an electronic Ford raptor truck piloted down the aisle by the ring-bearers, this farm wedding had it all. And that was just the ceremony!

Kara and Jeff met and fell in love in Chicago, but Kara was ready to return home to Blacksburg for her big day and was ecstatic to use her family farm as the venue for their wedding.

Thundercroft, as the family homestead was called, had all the trappings of a cozy farm. Horses softly whinnied in the distance, chickens ran underfoot, and if Kara had her way, she was going to dress those chickens in tulle skirts, bring in a disco ball and pull out all the confetti she could find.

But the day itself turned out even better than that. From a friendly caricature artist drawing people during cocktail hour to colored smoke bombs, the wedding was full of fun, love, and creativity.

The whimsy all started with Kara’s gorgeous floral print wedding gown. which evoked visions of a princess in a spring meadow, talking to some woodland creatures. Her bridal party was in deep jewel tones, and the groomsmen in sapphire blue, making the whole palette rich to look at.

The wedding ceremony and reception were held in a tent strung with lights and flowers, creating a happy tableau of color and light. As Kara walked down the aisle, a good family friend and basically big sister sang a beautiful song that filled the air with warmth and love, and then took her place to officiate the marriage.

As the ceremony came to an end, Kara and Jeff were showered in confetti under the dancing disco ball.

During the cocktail hour, while a friendly caricature artist was drawing people’s portraits, we hopped on a rugged golf cart to whisk us into the trees to take some creative wedding portraits.

We set off some colored smoke bombs and created a mystical atmosphere in the woods, that channeled their magic-in-the-forest aesthetic.

When we got back, the food, band, and disco balls were ready to greet us and we melted into the festive atmosphere, reveling in a sea of happy springtime flowers, bubbles, and laughter.

Capturing all the thoughtful details of this wedding was one of my favorite parts, from the bride’s delicate butterfly hair clips, whimsical flower girl crowns, custom-stitched handkerchiefs, or the gorgeous painted wedding cake. Everything was exceptionally beautiful and so artfully designed.

This unique Virginia family farm wedding at Thundercroft Farm was truly a one-of-a-kind experience. I felt lucky to be there to capture the love and creativity and be a part of the unique story of this Kara and Jeff’s special day. Take a look.
